Sustainability at GVGS

Since 2009 Goulburn Valley Grammar School, led by our Principal, Mr Mark Torriero and a dedicated group of staff and students, has been working through a sustainability programme under the ResourceSmart AuSSI Vic Programme.

This programme requires the school to work through five modules: Core, Energy, Waste, Water and Biodiversity. The programme was initially facilitated through CERES in Melbourne and more recently through Goulburn Murray Water.

Within the school community, a commitment to reducing our carbon footprint has come at all levels of the school.  Students, the Board, staff and parents have all demonstrated their commitment to sustainability through changes in practices, investment in new technologies, professional learning, research and development and supporting new initiatives.

The challenges for our school have included our dependence on electricity, the extremes of our annual climate cycle, watering our extensive grounds, absence of public transport to the school and re-fitting older buildings.

 Key strategies and initiatives include:

·         Appointing two Prefects each year with sustainability as their portfolio.

·         The establishment of the student led Sustainability Group (ESG).

·         The appointment of a staff Sustainability Coordinator.

·         Contracting with Carbonetix to undertake a detailed energy audit to advise the school on savings strategies and key priorities.

·         Upgrading old heating, cooling and lighting systems.

·         Ensuring energy efficient systems(C-bus) are incorporated in new buildings.

·         Applying thermal mass principles in the design of new buildings.

·         Using energy efficient (LED) lighting.

·         Investing in solar power systems and maximising Government funding opportunities.

·         Measuring and monitoring energy, water, paper and waste through the SETS programme.

·         Ensuring all storm water is retained on the site and re-used in our irrigation system.

·         Educating staff and students on daily energy savings strategies.

·         Students participating in the annual International Conference on Sustainability.

·         Introducing recycling stations around the school.

·         Establishing and monitoring reduction targets.

Our sustainability journey is proving rewarding and brings together the whole school community. We are pleased to celebrate both formal accreditation and the knowledge that we are reducing our carbon footprint on our precious planet Earth.
